Be The Change MN Hosts First-Ever Back to School Night at Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary
This year, Be The Change MN marked a new milestone by hosting its first Back to School Night at Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary in North Minneapolis. As we celebrate our 5th year of building connections and empowering youth, this event was special for several reasons: it was our first time offering grocery giveaways in response to the growing needs of the community, especially as North Minneapolis continues to experience the challenges of being a food desert.
A Night of Giving and Support
Understanding the barriers families face in preparing for the school year, we aimed to provide meaningful support. At this event, we distributed 200 bags of groceries and essential school supplies to 200 families, ensuring students had the resources they needed for a strong start to the school year. With the rising costs of school supplies and the ongoing challenges faced by underserved communities, this was an opportunity to step up and be a resource.
As part of the event, we also hosted a soul food picnic—a celebration of community and culture, where families could come together, share a meal, and connect in a meaningful way. Our goal was not only to provide material resources but also to create a welcoming and supportive environment for both students and families as they embark on the new school year.
A Community United
John, one of the event’s attendees, shared his appreciation, saying, “I take my hat off to Be The Change MN for coming out here and making a real difference for these kids and teachers. It was a great and memorable day.”
For us at Be The Change MN, giving back to the community means more than just handing out supplies—it’s about standing alongside families, offering support, and helping to create a strong foundation for the future. By connecting with local schools like Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary, we hope to continue providing resources and fostering lasting relationships that empower students to succeed.
This event was just the beginning. We are committed to making sure our local youth and families have the tools they need to thrive, not only in the classroom but in their everyday lives.
As we reflect on the success of this Back to School Night, we’re inspired to continue growing our initiatives and reaching even more families in need. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, supported, and participated. Together, we’re creating positive change, one event at a time.
