Each year, Be The Change MN partners with Mall of America to transform Nickelodeon Universe into a true Winter Wonderland — a magical morning of joy, family connection, and belonging for 1,000 elementary students (Pre-K–5th grade) and their families from four selected schools in underrepresented Minneapolis communities.

What began as a simple idea has grown into a powerful tradition that now welcomes over 3,000 attendees, including 200 volunteers, community partners, sponsors, and school faculty who come together to create a day filled with warmth, laughter, and hope. For many of the children who attend, this event is their holiday celebration — their chance to experience the magic of the season surrounded by kindness and care. For some, it’s their first time ever inside Mall of America or riding the thrilling attractions at Nickelodeon Universe.

Dedicated school faculty members also volunteer their time, creating meaningful connections with families outside the classroom. These moments of shared joy and celebration help strengthen relationships between teachers, students, and parents — building trust and community that extend far beyond the event itself.

Thanks to our generous sponsors and partners, Be The Change MN removes every financial barrier, allowing families to experience the day completely free of cost — from transportation, admission, and meals prepared by local culinary chefs, to toys, books, warm winter coats, and brand-new tennis shoes. Each coat (valued at $80–$120) and each pair of shoes ($60–$100) represents more than an item — it’s a message that every child matters and deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

The day comes alive with partners such as the Minneapolis Police and Fire Departments, Free Smiles for Kids signing youth up for free dental cleanings and exams, and Build-A-Bear providing each student in grades Pre-K through 3 with a cuddly bear to take home. Families enjoy face painters, balloon artists, 360-photo booths, music, and endless surprises — each moment a reminder of what community looks like when we come together.

Winter Wonderland isn’t just an event; it’s an embodiment of love, unity, and possibility. It’s proof that when people give from the heart, we can create lasting memories and relieve families of the financial burdens that often overshadow this time of year.
